Our company’s roots begin in Wall Street in 1917 when George
McKelvey, Jr. (1897-1976) entered the investment business. George
McKelvey worked on Wall Street for more than five decades as a partner
and the head of the tax exempt bond departments of several New York
Stock Exchange firms. He was the author of numerous articles on tax
exempt financing particularly related to toll roads. He served as Financial
Advisor for the New Jersey Turnpike, the Garden State Parkway, the
Atlantic City Expressway, and the New Jersey Highway Authority under
several governors. (View a pdf of George McKelvey's article
"A Real Look at Turnpike Bonds" from The Commercial and Financial
Chronicle, June 21, 1956.)
In 1960, he and Elizabeth McKelvey (1906-1999), his wife and partner,
founded George McKelvey Co., Inc. Elizabeth McKelvey’s career also
began on Wall Street where, in the 1920s, she worked first as a
secretary and then as a broker's assistant at E.F. Hutton. She served
during the 1929 crash and moved to Darby and Company, a municipal
bond specialist, in 1931 where George McKelvey was a co-owner.
George McKelvey Co., Inc. is now well into its second generation of
leadership.
